Permanent Residence Card

Becoming a Permanent Resident (PR) brings many benefits like providing you legal protection under the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms amongst other things. Once granted PR status, you do not have to carry your card all the time in order to receive the benefits of being a PR. However, PRs must have a valid PR card or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada; without one, you may not be able to return.

A PR card is usually issued for five years, but can sometimes be issued for one year instead. It is valid until the expiry date listed on the card.

EXPIRED PR CARDS

Although the expiration date on your PR card does not affect your status, you still need to apply for a new card when your current PR card expires. This is to ensure smooth legal processes for yourself such as travel and accessing healthcare.
